Sisian is situated 6 km south of the Yerevan-Meghry highway, on the both banks of the river Vorotan. It was included in the Tsaruk Province of the Syunyats Country of Mets Hayk.
It was called Sisavan in 1935-40 and Gharakilisa until 1995. The area is rich in historical monuments. “Zorakarer” (Karahunch), fortress-dwelling (4-3 millennium B.C.), and the St. Gregor Illuminator church of the 6-7th centuries are the historical architectural monuments of Sisian. St. Gregor Illuminator church has similarities with St. Hripsime church of Edjmiadzin. The church was built by Syunyats Prince Kohazat.
