Karahounge - Zorac Qarer

Day 1: Arrival

Day 2: Karahounge Cultural Heritage

Excursion to the monastic complex of Tatev (Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO). Take the ropeway from Halidzor Village and go to the monastery above the beautiful Vorotan canyon. Tatev is an architectural masterpiece dating from the 10th century and is often called a monastery built on the edge of nothing. Tour to Karahunge (Stonehenge), ancient observatory 6mil B.C.

It is located at 1770 m. above sea level and occupies 7 hectares of territory. The monument consists of about 223 basalt slabs of which 84 have 4-5cm long openings in them (which, for Stone Age, have been rendered with incredible smoothness). Drive back to Yerevan. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan.

Know More About Zorac Qarer of Armenia:

Zorats Qarer is one of the most interesting and mysterious places in Armenia. Zorac Qarer is situated 3 km North of Sisian town, Syunik Region. It is also known as Cic karer (Stake stones) and Ghoshun dash by people’s tale. Recently the monument has mistakenly been named as Carahunge. Prehistoric monuments consist of hundreds of Standing Stones on a territorial area of approximately 3 hectares. Many of these stones have smooth angled holes.

It is 1770 m above sea level. The monument has partly been explored. Here partial research has been carried out by astronomer Parsamyan El., archaeologist Khnkikyan O., physicist Heruni P., and by others. Research of the monument and the surrounding area allows approval that Zorats Qarer is a unique historical-cultural archaeological site.

Archaeological materials of different times have been found from the noticeable residence’s surface from the surrounding area of Zorats Qarer, dating back approximately the same era. Above mentioned materials refer to B.C., III-I mil.

Noting the exceptional role and importance of the Zorats Qarer monument in the research work of social-cultural problems of ancientArmeniathe Government of RA gave the monument “Zorac Qarer” historical and cultural reserve status according to the decree, 26 June 2009. According to the decree, 2 December 2010 the territory of “Zorac Qarer” historical-cultural reserve residence is determined 50 hectares.
