Gyumri is the second largest city in Armeian and the capital of the Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. It is located around 126 km north of the capital Yerevan. As of the 2009 official estimate, the city had a population of 146,400, down from 150,917 reported at the 2001 official census.
